Book Post: 下妻物語 or Kamikaze Girls by Novala Takemoto

So, after I signed up for a free year of Amazon Prime with my student email (I also sent a FutureMe email in one year to remind me to cancel it before I have to start paying) I've been getting a lot of (relatively) inexpensive things because hey. Free fast shipping. I've seen the movie and read the book, but that was both ages ago. I don't even remember where I read it the first time. Light novels are something I purchase more frequently than manga, if only in a misguided attempt to tell publishers "hey translate more light novels please". Alas, if only.

If you have read KG, then you know it's a fun story. I like the differences between the book and the movie, and in the end I think I prefer the book (I always do). How about you guys?

Light novel vs. Movie? Totally didn't mess that up, haha

And if you haven't read or seen the movie, it's a fun, quirky watch and a good, quick read. Sometimes when I'm just feeling blah or down I'll watch it on youtube and generally even just listening to it perks me up. I love Anna Tsuchiya ♥

  1. I never knew they sold light novels in English :O (unless it's untranslated...)

When you say light novel vs. book, does that mean there's a difference between a book and a light novel?

  2. I liked the book a little better but was still in love with the movie!

  3. @Butters Oops, my bad, I meant the movie. There's only the light novel, which is in english!

And there are small differences between LN and books, but wikipedia refers to it as a LN so... there we go?

  4. I've seen the movie, but never read the book. I like what you did with Amazon Prime though. Might do that myself for free books, haha.

As for light novels vs movie: I dunno, kinda depends on how the movie turns out. So far I've only read 3 books that later became movies: Blood and Chocolate, Darren Shan (Vampire's Assistant) Saga, and Twilight. Now Twilight sucked balls even as a book, but the other two books were good from what I remembered (then again, I was an angsty kid when I read those books...so maybe that's not saying much, lol) O yea I also followed Avatar: The Last Airbender, and I heard the movie BOMBED. Does that count?

So when possible, I just watch the movie and not worry about the book. It's easier to just watch the movies, lol.

  8. I've never read that book, but I typically prefer the book version to the movie. That isn't to say I won't watch the movie, I love movies!

  9. Books are almost always better than the movies, with a couple of exceptions. I think it's mostly because if you've already read the book, you have the characters and scenes set in your head, so when you watch the movie and it deviates from that, your knee can't stop jerking. Apart from that, I have never heard of a "light novel." What exactly does that mean?

  10. @tencrowns a light novel is a book no longer than 40k to 50k words, targeted to a junior high / high school demographic. Kind of like the japanese equivalent to the western YA genre. The books also tend to be serialized, and every so often adapted into anime.

  14. @ Ada it's the same plotwise, but it has a lot more detail and some events happen a little differently. Mostly because for such a short book, there's a lot that happens and stuff had to get compressed for the movie ^^

  15. I've been meaning to watch that movie, but if the book's better, I'll start with that.
